A new project set to create more than 20 apprenticeships across the North West has launched with an exciting event to engage people interested in careers in construction.
Build Learn Grow, a partnership between Great Places Housing Group, Bolton at Home, Seddon and Southdale, will see 300 homes built in Bolton, Burnley, Salford, Bury and Wigan. The apprentices will be recruited to work on the construction of them over the next two years.
The project launch event, during National Apprenticeship Week, saw young men and women given the chance to try bricklaying, tiling, plumbing, painting and joinery supervised by qualified tradespeople at a micro-building site at construction company Seddon’s Bolton headquarters.
They will now be encouraged to apply for apprenticeships on the major new house building programme with work expected to start later this summer.
As well as looking to attract young people, Build Learn Grow is also looking to recruit people who may want a change of career or who are unemployed.
Stephen Porter, chief executive at Great Places Housing Group, said: "In this current economic climate it is more important than ever to offer people the chance to learn a trade to help them build a long lasting career in the construction industry.”
Gwen Crawford, director of regeneration at Bolton at Home, said: "We’re really pleased to be part of this initiative, which has the power to make a big difference to young people’s lives. Participants will be able to discover whether the construction industry is for them, and if it is, they will be able to make a positive impression on potential future employers.”
Seddon Construction managing director Jonathan Seddon said: "Creating apprenticeships is a key part of our commitment to making a positive impact in communities. We’re delighted to have been able to welcome so many motivated and enthusiastic young people to the micro building site where they were able to try out different construction trades and find out more about the opportunities our industry has to offer.”
Stuart Allison, North West regional director of Southdale, said: "Build Learn Grow is a great project offering fantastic opportunities for young people to take up apprenticeships and will be a real part of major change in and around the communities in which they live. Not only will the partnership deliver much-needed homes across the North West, we will help to train the workforce of the future.”
