RISING STAR MICHAEL NAMED AS APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR

Painting and maintenance specialist Seddon Property Services has named young painter and decorator Michael Shanks from Bodedern on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales, as the company’s Apprentice of the Year. The 24-year-old was chosen from 90 Seddon Property Services apprentices across England, Wales and Scotland for the title. Seddon Property Services area manager Gary Owen who nominated him for the award, says: “Michael has so much enthusiasm for the job, he works incredibly hard both at college and on site and has impressed everyone throughout his apprenticeship. He thoroughly deserves to be the company’s Apprentice of the Year.” Michael previously worked as a shop-fitter before starting his apprenticeship with Seddon in September 2009, achieving his NVQ Level 2 qualification in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting. With Seddon’s support, he is now studying for the advanced NVQ Level 3 qualification in Decorative Occupations at York College. He says: “The apprenticeship has enabled me to learn a trade and with Seddon’s help, I’ve gained skills that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I really enjoy what I do – every day on site is different and my goal is to keep improving and learning new techniques.” The company presented Michael with a trophy and £100 to mark his achievement at a ceremony in Manchester. The award has been made at the start of celebrations to mark Seddon Group’s 75 years of recruiting apprentices. Stuart Seddon, chairman of Seddon Property Services, says: “Many congratulations to Michael on his award, we’re absolutely delighted to have helped someone of his calibre gain qualifications and progress in his career. Recruiting talented people such as Michael to our business and helping them further their skills is an integral part of our approach and ensures we have the expert workforce capable of delivering a first-rate service to our clients.” Seddon Group will take on 75 apprentices and trainees in the next 12 months to mark its 75 years of apprentice recruitment.
