Seddon is a family-owned and managed business that spans three centuries and five generations.

From its humble beginnings in Little Hulton near Manchester in 1897 the business now delivers over £160 million of building projects across the UK employing nearly 800 people.


The company history can be plotted against the following key dates:

1897

George and John Seddon begin a bricklaying business in Little Hulton, near Manchester called G & J Seddon

1920

The company is incorporated as G&J Seddon Limited

1932

The contract construction business, J&S Seddon (Building) Limited is created

1951

The plant engineering business, Seddons (Plant and Engineers) Limited, is created; a branch office in Stoke-on-Trent is opened

1957

The Stoke-on-Trent office becomes a separate subsidiary, Seddon (Stoke) Limited

1958

The District Garage, providing automotive service and used vehicle sales, is established

1982

The Seddon Group is created as a holding company for family businesses

1986

Winget, manufacturer of site dumpers and cement mixers, is acquired

1989

Viceroy Developments, a multi-site developer, is created

1992

Seddon Homes, a developer of private housing for sale is launched; Chestergate Seddon is a commercial development company is launched

1999

Bristol family business, Jotcham & Kendall, originally founded in 1680, is acquired to bolster regional coverage in construction. The company enters project management with the creation of Chestergate Health; the company enters the nursery and day care business with Nu Nu Limited

2001

The subsidiary, Seddon Regeneration Limited is created (in 2004 this is rebranded as ID4Living Ltd)

2009

The two Seddon Group construction businesses, J&S Seddon (Building) Limited and G&J Seddon Limited merge to form Seddon Construction Limited, providing local delivery and national coverage

2013

Seddon Group restructures to create Seddon Solutions wholly-owned by Christopher Seddon.
